>> The
Far Side by Courttia Newland
The Far Side was an exploration of identity and hostility, centring on the
murder of Danny (a black youth) by Luke (a white youth). Although the murderer
is exonerated by the law, a local businessman holds a re-trial, the jury made
up of Mothers from both sides of the divide, while both lads, one now a ghost,
have the chance to tell their own stories. The piece was inspired by the Stephen
Lawrence case, and used this as the “jumping off” point for the
work. I played the role of Luke Crenshaw the exonerated murderer.
The Far Side originally opened in 2000 at the Post Office Theatre,
and played to packed houses for the entirety of its run. It was then revived
in 2001, and was taken to the Tricycle Theatre, Kilburn, London, where once
again it was a huge success.
"Newland's play brilliantly demonstrates that
almost no form of judicial process can provide perfect justice. His tough
and intriguing
dramatic structure is matched by O'Hara's taut, angry production." John
Thaxter, The Stage
